I've co-authored six books and edited about 20. Writing a book is hard and the goal of writing one probably isn't enough to get you to the finish line. There needs to be a drive/passion/love behind what you're writing and who you're writing for to keep you going. Without that, you probably won't finish the book, and even if you do it probably won't be very good. Focus on the passion and the book will emerge as evidence of that passion. In fact, if the passion is there I don't think you'll be able to stop it!
WOW. That's amazing expertise. Thanks, Adam for lending this frame. And I totally remember your work from GolIve tutorial books (I was the vp of GoLive in it's pre-Adobe days)
The thing that everyone forgets (including me, because honestly who wants to remember it) is the drive to prove oneself as worthy is its own "passionate" energy. Running from our past. Running from that sense of unworthiness. That's what I'm guessing this person is being driven by. When I write, pain pushes until vision pulls, that's what I'm talking to. I feel like it was the fuel of my 30s. Like rocket fuel in a certain way.
But it's so much more rewarding to be running towards something, to be pulled by love.
I am blessed to have worked with and as I am SO much more clearer on my house of belonging and the Onlyness that serves that, I will ensure that I avoid and indeed challenge this still too often sought ‘professionalism’ that is often the antithesis of how I really want to show up.
“In my effort to meet “professional” expectations, I couldn't be my own best expression.“
Thank you for helping me and all of us show up more fully in that spot in the world that only we stand 🙏 👍
Writing this piece reminded me of a conversation I had. I was at the airport going to the big TED event in Vancouver and decided to share the taxi with a friend. I asked her what she was hoping to learn/grow/consider as she took this week to immerse herself in new ideas, and she asked back, what should she focus on. I'll never forget that gap. What do you want, I effectively asked so she could hear her own heart's longing. And she answered back, tell me, what should I want.
If we can just learn to ask ourselves, is this my highest and best expression, we can find ourselves living into our fullness, in community, and making an impact.
Thanks for reading, Garry, and of course the comments. It's great to see what resonates.
